A dormant Ethereum wallet from the network's early days has become active after remaining untouched for more than 11 years. The address holds 2,000 ETH, valued at around $3.79 million based on current market prices, according to blockchain tracking service Whale Alert.
The wallet dates back to Ethereum's pre-mine period, when ETH was distributed before the blockchain officially launched. At the time the address received its funds, the holdings were worth only about $620, highlighting Ethereum's significant growth over the past decade.
Early Ethereum Wallets Continue to Reappear
Several Long-Inactive Addresses Have Returned
The latest wallet activation is part of a growing trend involving early Ethereum addresses becoming active after years of inactivity.
Earlier this year, blockchain trackers reported several dormant pre-mine wallets moving funds for the first time in more than a decade. These included wallets holding 10,000 ETH, 2,000 ETH, 790 ETH, 401 ETH, 400 ETH, and 99 ETH.
No major pre-mine wallet activations were reported during June, making this latest event the first such case seen in recent weeks.
Although these wallets have become active, the transactions do not automatically indicate that the owners intend to sell their holdings. Dormant wallets may move funds for security upgrades, wallet migrations, or other personal reasons.
Similar Activity Seen Across Bitcoin
Ethereum is not the only cryptocurrency experiencing this trend.
Earlier this year, Whale Alert also identified two long-dormant Bitcoin wallets becoming active after remaining untouched for more than 12 years. Together, the wallets held 2,600 BTC, attracting attention across the cryptocurrency community because of their age and value.
These movements are closely watched by traders because they involve coins that have remained inactive since the early years of blockchain networks.
Bitmine Expands Its Ethereum Holdings
Institutional Interest in ETH Remains Strong
While old wallets are returning to activity, institutional investors continue increasing their exposure to Ethereum.
According to on-chain data shared by Onchain Lens, Bitmine acquired 7,430 ETH during the past week. The purchase increased the company's Ethereum holdings to approximately 5.78 million ETH.
Reports indicate that around 4.91 million ETH from Bitmine's treasury is currently staked, allowing the company to earn rewards while supporting the Ethereum network. Its Ethereum treasury is valued at roughly $10.9 billion, while its combined crypto, cash, and other assets total approximately $11.5 billion.
Why This Matters
Dormant Ethereum wallet activity often attracts attention because it involves some of the network's earliest participants. While these transactions do not necessarily signal upcoming selling pressure, they offer valuable insight into long-term holders and the movement of historic assets on the blockchain.
At the same time, continued accumulation by institutional investors shows that large organizations remain interested in Ethereum despite ongoing market fluctuations. Together, these developments provide investors with a clearer picture of both long-term holder behavior and institutional confidence in the cryptocurrency.
Conclusion
A pre-mine Ethereum wallet containing 2,000 ETH has become active after more than 11 years, making it the latest in a series of long-dormant addresses returning to the blockchain. Meanwhile, institutional buying continues, with Bitmine expanding its Ethereum holdings and maintaining billions of dollars worth of ETH. These developments highlight both the historical significance of early Ethereum wallets and the continued interest in the world's second-largest cryptocurrency.
